BIM Task Group

Agreement signed with the
National Institute of Building Sciences

Mark Bew, Chair of the Government BIM Task Group and the Chair of buildingSMART UK & Ireland has signed a memorandum of agreement with The National Institute of BUILDING SCIENCES (Washington DC) and the buildingSMARTalliance.

The agreement grants buildingSMART UK & Ireland a royalty free licence to reproduce and use the National BIM Standard United-States (NBIMS-US) to develop a national BIM standard with the principles of interoperability.  Reciprocally buildingSMART UK & Ireland has granted rights to the Institute and the buildingSMARTalliance to reproduce and use the UK & Ireland BIM standard.

This cooperative agreement sets out an agenda of joint working to promote acceptance of:

  • ISO 16739 for Industry Foundation Classes
  • Information exchanges defined by the Life Cycle information exchange (LCie) to specifically include the Construction Operations Building information exchange (COBie) standard for facilities handover, the Specifiers Property information exchange (SPie) standard for templates, generic objects and product data and the Equipment Layout information exchange (ELie) for the production of equipment of isometric drawings
  • Standard case-study methodology for the execution and dissemination of process and product improvements arising from the development of these standards.

This five year agreement to work collaboratively will be of great significance in supporting the delivery of the UK Government BIM Task Group programme of work.
