BIM Task Group

Product data, call for proposals

March 16, 2016Tamara DaleNews

The BIM Task Group in association with the CPA, BIM4M2 and CIBSE are looking to develop a standardised process for the sharing of product data, including a plain language dictionary to enable both those requesting information, and those providing it (product manufacturers) with a common set of parameters relating to harmonised standards, other recognised industry documentation such as CIBSE Guide M and NRM3, and other industry agreed terms. The terms in this dictionary will then be available to create product data sets, and share data across other software platforms through the use of unique identifiers for each unique parameter. The dictionary and template tool will be freely available to industry through the CPA website by the end of April 2016. The dictionary will be mapped to the ISO Industry Foundation Classes.

We are seeking proposals from interested parties to provide a self-funding solution to host the dictionary and data sets tool, and enable their ongoing development through registered authors, and maintenance for a time period to be agreed, but no less than 1 year from launch. Please provide expressions of interest no later than 18th March 2016, with final proposals to be received no later than noon on 24th March, for review and final decisions to be made on 29th March with a kick-off meeting to be held on 30th March.

Interested parties will receive a copy of the draft product data standard that more fully describes the requirements of this activity no later than 18th March.

Whilst the focus here is initially on the UK market, the approach is developed to be scalable to an international context, enabled through mapping to the Industry Foundation Classes and internationally agreed terminology. This will also enable the flexibility to provide information in a format that a manufacturer is familiar with, and for it to be presented to the requester in a format they are familiar with.

ICES BIM 2015 Conference

ICES BIM 2015 Conference

31 March 2015, London

In May 2011 the Cabinet Office published the Government Construction Strategy. It stated that “Government will require fully collaborative 3D BIM (with all project and asset information, documentation and data being electronic) as a minimum by 2016.”

Unlike many professions, the civil engineering surveyor provides an integral and continuous role to the BIM process throughout the whole life cycle of a built-environment asset.

Do you fully understand the BIM context and what it involves?

As a Commercial Manager or Geospatial Engineer will you be BIM compliant by 2016?

Line-up to include:
Peter Hansford FCInstCES, Chief Construction Adviser to the Government
David Philp, Head of BIM Implementation, UK Cabinet Office
Mervyn Richards OBE, Author of PAS 1192-2-2013
Barry Gleeson, Thameslink and Network Rail

Launch of Digital Built Britain

February 26, 2015Tamara DaleEvents, News

Today 26/2/2015 Rt Hon Dr Vince Cable at a site visit in London announced the launch of Digital Built Britain, the UK Level 3 Building Information Modelling program.

The works will build a digital economy for the  construction industry in support of dramatically improving delivery, operations and services provided to citizens.

The programme will build on the standards and savings delivered by the BIM level 2 initiative which has been central to the £840M savings achieved on central public spend in 2013/14.

The benefits BIM delivers throughout a project’s life cycle and the cost savings are substantial. However a considerable cultural shift is required if BIM is to be properly implemented across the built environment, ahead of the Government’s 2016 deadline for its use on all centrally procured public sector projects.

The BIM value proposition includes having a greater understanding of the entire life cycle process from the beginning so that we can better understand the end results. Customers are not always getting the assets and the outcomes they want or need, and BIM can help rectify this.

The RICS BIM Conference returns for the 4th year with clear guidance from experts on how BIM is used on projects, in various sectors, and their experiences of implementing BIM in practice. Assess where the real benefits of BIM lie and how the QS, FM and operational sectors can seize the opportunities BIM offers.

Key features include; what is expected of you when implementing BIM, dealing with challenges and overcoming barriers, as well as meeting your clients’ demands. The day will highlight lessons learnt from implementation and the role of BIM in supporting the operation of an asset. Industry experts, advancing the use of BIM, will lead sessions in two break-out streams with sessions focused on strategy, management of data, processes, value and future developments in BIM.

Speakers include:

David Philp, Head of BIM, UK BIM Task Group and BIM Director – EMEA, AECOM

Terry Stocks, Deputy Head of the Estates Department, Ministry of Justice & Delivery Director for Level 2 BIM (to be confirmed)

Brent Mauti, Enterprise Head of BIM, CH2M Hill

Vasileios Vernikos, Head of BIM Development, Transportation – Europe, CH2M Hill

John Kerbey, Head of BIM, HS2

Will Hackney, Head of BIM Strategy, Transport for London & London Underground

Gary Ross, Principal Consultant, Excitech

Tolis Chatzisymeon, CEO, Nomitech

Alan Windle, European VP & Business Development Manager, Nomitech

BIM4SME Blog – The M&E BIM Gap

December 6, 2014Tamara DaleBIM4SMEs, News

Janet Backett writes about the M&E BIM Gap on BIM4SME blog.

She says:

“There seems to be a widely held industry misconception, even among those who work within mechanical and electrical building services (M&E) that BIM is a 3D drawing or in fact that the M&E drawings are “the design”

The correction of this misconception is I believe our collective responsibility as M&E / CIBSE (Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineering) Engineers.

It is somewhat worrying as it leads some to believe that the CAD 3D fabrication draughtsmen who produce installation drawings working at construction stage are the key to the missing link in BIM for M&E (…) “

“PAS 1192-5: Specification for security-minded building information management, digital built environments and smart asset management” is currently in development

October 29, 2014Tamara DaleNews

The BIM Task Group’s “Security Working Group” announced on 29 October at “ICE BIM 2014: Business as Usual” Conference in London that a BSI Publicly Available Specification (PAS), “PAS 1192-5: Specification for security-minded building information management, digital built environments and smart asset management”, is currently in development.

The PAS will outline security threats to the use of information during asset conception, procurement, design, construction, operation, and disposal.  It will address the steps required to create and cultivate an appropriate security mind-set and the security culture necessary to enable business to unlock new and more efficient processes and collaborative ways of working.

The intended audience for this PAS includes organisations and individuals responsible for the procurement, design, construction, delivery, operation and maintenance of buildings and infrastructure assets.  Although specifically targeted at the use of Level 2 BIM, the requirements will provide a foundation to support the evolution of future digital built environments and will enable smart asset management.
